What is Pony Club?
PARTICIPANTS: Participating members of Pony Club are children and young adults up to 25 years of age who are interested in horsemanship, sportsmanship and leadership. Pony Club is a phenomenal youth organization that teaches all aspects of horse care in addition to great riding skills for almost any discipline.
Pony Club offers a “rating” system that children progress through to assess their riding (in chosen discipline or traditional rating) and horse management skills. Pony club has made several changes over that past decade. If you remember Pony Club of the past, you might remember that is was heavily based on eventing. Nowadays Pony Club participants can rate up through levels in their chosen discipline without jumping! Children that are horseless or interested riders can also rate a horse management only option after achieving a few of their D-ratings.
ACTIVITIES: “Pony Club’s basic belief in teaching horse care, riding and safety is teamed with a belief that riding should be fun and exciting. To combine these principles many clubs offer additional activities in areas such as”:
• Camps
• Dressage
• Driving
• Eventing
• Foxhunting
• Horse Management
• Mounted Games
• Polo
• Polocrosse
• Quiz
• Show Jumping
• Tetrathlon
• Trail Riding
• Vaulting
PARENTS: “Being involved with Pony Club takes a substantial time commitment. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend all club meetings and events. Pony Club really is a family experience; it is an excellent investment of your time for your child’s future.”
SPONSORS: “A sponsor is a parent, or other interested adult, who takes an active role in the club and pays a club Sponsor fee. A Sponsor votes on the Pony Club officers and helps plan, organize, and run club activities. Sponsors are also encouraged to be Corporate members”.
MORE WAYS TO BECOME INVOLVED: Forming a Pony Club takes a community. If you are over the age of 25 and still would like to support our club we have several options:
1. You could consider a sponsorship or become a corporate member
2. Volunteer at our PC meetings/rallies. We’re always looking for folks to help out. You are also welcome to join or form a committee to support our club. Options include:
• Horse Management (HM) Committee – coordinates HM judging and HM workshops
• Instruction Committee – coordinates mounted and unmounted lessons
• Policy Committee – assists in establishing and updating club policies
• Social Committee – plans fun equine and non-equine related activities
• Fund-raising Committee – coordinates fund-raising efforts
• “Friend-raising” committee – involves alumni, former officers, volunteers and others in activities.
At a basic level our club will be looking for officer positions: Treasurer, Secretary, Joint-DC, etc
3. Join the Horsemasters’ Program for adults that want to participate in Pony Club. Members of Horsemasters’ can organize lessons with or without Pony Club, and offers a similar (but not the same) rating system as Pony Club. Perks to becoming a Horsemaster include access to open spots in Pony Club region clinics, and access to mounted and unmounted Pony Club activities.
